The European Newtwork on Statelessness has recently published an article on the Austrian naturalisation procedure. The article explains the crucial judgment issued by The Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) on the prevention and reduction of statelessness in Europe.
Starting from the analysis of a specific case, the article analysis the ruling confirming that Austria must implement safeguards against statelessness in its laws regarding the acquisition of the Austrian nationality that, currently, requires a person to renounce their other nationalities.
The article refers to the Migration Policy Index 2020 that asserts that Austria‘s nationality law is among the strictest in Europe in terms of access to nationality, with Austria ranking last after Bulgaria.
